Answers to the most commonly asked questions

  1. What's the difference between Taekwondo and Karate?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that emphasizes the lower body by focusing on moves designed to keep opponents at a greater distance. While taekwondo does include many hand strikes, punches and other upper-body techniques, the style is best known for it's wide variety of kicks.

  2. Why should I practice Taekwondo?
Regular practice of taekwondo is an excellent way to improve all aspects of physical fitness: endurance, agility, flexibility, strength, reflexes, balance and judgement. The self-discipline of the art also improves one's self-confidence, especially in times of stress and confrontation, and one's self-esteem and perseverance.

  3. If I've trained in another martial art or at another taekwondo studio, do I have to start over as a white belt?
No. We recognize the rank you've achieved, regardless of the style or school. You will remain at your current rank while you learn our style, then continue to progress when you're ready.

  4. Will I be expected to compete in tournaments?
No. While we've had many students compete (and excel) in state and national tournaments, we don't emphasize or require tournament competition. We view the "sport" of taekwondo training. We want our students to improve their bodies and minds by experiencing the full spectrum of taekwondo, including traditional and modern techniques, drills, "forms" practice (sequences of techniques that simulate combat), self defense, mental training and sparring.

  5. What does America Taekwondo Center (ATC) have to offer?
A second-to-none training of both mind and body with the help of well experienced instructors to help you reach your highest potential. ATC instructors see each individual's potential and aims to help them reach their goal. ATC enables you to learn about all aspects of taekwondo and have fun in the process.

  6. What is the philosophy of Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is not just fighting or self-defense. It aims to develop the whole person- physically, mentally and spiritually. Through self-discipline, taekwondo practitioners aim for control over mind and body. Important attitudes are those of self-control, humility, perseverance, bravery, justice, loyalty and an indomitable spirit.

  7. How long does it take to earn a black belt?
For students who are committed to their training, train hard and regularly, it typically takes two-and-a-half to four years to earn a black belt.

  8. Do I have to be really fit to learn Taekwondo?
No! Learning and practicing taekwondo will make you fit and keep you staying fit. As a beginner, you won't be expected to keep up with the advanced students. However, you will be expected to do your best and strive always to improve.

  9. What do the colored belts mean?
Belt color signifies rank, or proficiency. Beginners wear a white belt, then graduate to yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, red, brown and then black. Students have to pass practical and theory tests to progress to the next rank. A serious student can reach black belt in two or three years.

  10. Will I learn to defend myself?
Yes. You will be taught techniques and strategies for self-defense, including grabs and throw as well as taekwondo kicks and punches. Your developing speed, strength and self-confidence will help you in any dangerous situation.
